Last weekend when I was all alone in Logan I was hitting up all the antique stores to pass time until I had to go to work. As I was walking into one of the stores there was a cute little old lady holding the door open for some women who were carrying a table to their car. I walked in and heard the ladies thanking her for holding the door and she said back to them, "oh no, don't thank me... I really needed to feel useful today and now I do."
I want to be like this lady when I get old, I want to find ways to be helpful instead of sitting at home thinking about my frailty and trying to not be in other people's way. One of my biggest fears in life is that I will die alone because I'm the type of person that waits for others to initiate a friendship. It's pretty stupid really but sometimes I get caught up worrying about being a bother instead of worrying about being a good friend. This is something I really want to change because I'm a firm believer that we all have qualities that others need and we have no right to keep them to ourselves, even if it's as small as holding a door open for someone else.
So yeah, I guess the moral that I need to learn from this story is like what A.A. Milne wrote in Winnie the Pooh:
"You can't stay in your corner of the Forest waiting for others to come to you. You have to go to them sometimes."
AMEN! :)
